The 2001 World Series was a strange championship for a lot of reasons. The September 11th attacks pushed Game 1 all the way into late October and cast a shadow over everything. The Yankees then became the national darling, in some respect, even though they'd normally be the villains, having won the last three titles. The Diamondbacks had become the fastest expansion team to reach the World Series, and they mostly outplayed New York through six games. And Game 7 had enough twists and turns to act as a fitting cap to this strange, melancholy, and memorable chapter in sports history.
